How to Prepare Your Home for Professional Painting

Published April 2026 • 6 min read

Preparation is 70% of a quality paint job. While our team at Bros Painting Sydney handles all the heavy lifting and meticulous sanding, there are a few things you can do to ensure the project runs smoothly and your property is fully protected.

1. Declutter and Clear the Space

The more room our painters have to move, the faster and more efficiently we can work. If possible, move smaller furniture items, ornaments, and electronics to a different room. For larger items like sofas and dining tables, moving them to the center of the room is usually sufficient, as we will cover them with protective plastic sheeting.

2. Clear the Walls

Remove all paintings, mirrors, and clocks from the walls. If you plan on rehanging them in the same spot, you can leave the nails or hooks in place, and we will paint around them. If you want a fresh start, let us know, and we will remove the hardware and patch the holes during our preparation stage.

3. Clean the Surfaces

While we will conduct a light clean and sand of the surfaces to be painted, removing heavy dust or cobwebs beforehand is greatly appreciated. For exterior projects, ensuring that garden beds are trimmed back from the walls will allow us better access and a cleaner finish.

4. Secure Your Pets

We love pets, but a painting site can be a stressful environment for them. Wet paint, open doors, and ladders can pose risks. It's best to keep your pets in a separate area or arrange for them to stay elsewhere during the active hours of the project.

5. Plan Your Access

Ensure we have a clear way to enter the property and access a water source for cleaning our equipment. If you're in a high-density area like Bondi or Bondi Junction, please let us know about any parking restrictions or building access codes in advance.

6. Finalize Your Colours

Nothing stalls a project faster than indecision on colour. We offer free colour consultations to help you choose the perfect palette. Having your choices finalized before the start date ensures we can order the premium materials needed to begin on time.

Why Preparation Matters

A well-prepared site allows us to focus on what we do best—delivering a flawless, high-end finish. Whether it's an interior repaint in Randwick or a full exterior restoration in Maroubra, your preparation helps us achieve the best possible result for your home.
